This side-event will discuss the application of safeguards for biodiversity in relation to reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries. It will provide an opportunity for scientists, policy makers and members of the business community to be informed and to influence the outcomes of current research and development funded by the EC.
In particular, we will look at the monitoring and governance systems required for the implementation of REDD+ at local community and national levels and explore options for providing the operational indicators needed to report on the delivery of CBD 2020 targets to restore and safeguard ecosystems that provide essential services that contribute to health, livelihoods and well-being (Aichi Target 14) and to enhance the resilience of ecosystems and the contribution of biodiversity to carbon stocks (Aichi Target 15).
Speakers will be:
- Adrian Peres: European Commission, DG Research
- Karin Zaunberger: European Commission, DG Environment
- Terry Parr, NERC Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, UK
- Nashieli Garcia, UNAM/CONABIO, Mexico
- Andrew Heald, Manager, Sustainable Plantations, UPM, The Biofore Company
- Robert Nasi, Director Forests, Trees and Agroforestry (CRP6), Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR)
There will be a general discussion session following the talks.
