CFS-CONECOFOR's membership of ALTER-Net is pending an ALTER-Net Council decision.
The National Forest Service is a technical police Corps founded in 1822 as the main Italian authority for forests management and protection. It's roles include environmental conservation, pollution threats, illegal hunting, forest fire prevention, training and research. Since 1985, the CONECOFOR Office has been the National focal point of the ICP Forests Programme, whose National branch is called CONECOFOR Network. CONECOFOR Office also runs the National Forest Inventory. The Office has thus delivered, for more than 15 years, uninterrupted monitoring and inventory data on forest health. Between 2005 and 2009, CONECOFOR was the Italian partner within ALTER-Net and, in the frame of this Project, could lead the involvement of several Italian sites in terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems into the European Long Term Ecological Research Network (LTER-Europe) in 2006, cooperating with several research Institutes of excellence to start the Italian LTER Network. CONECOFOR Office is today involved in ALTER-Net, as well as in LTER Italy, LTER Europe and EnvEurope (LIFE+ co-financed project, “Environmental Quality and Pressure assessment across Europe: the LTER Network as an integrated and shared system for ecosystem monitoring” , 2010-2013).
